I am new all this. Having had my father diagnosed with Alzheimer's and my mother with mild Dementia shortly after, I am not sure what to do with anything. I am a bit all over the place and stressed. I just want to know how long I have for them before I need to either have someone step in or find a nursing home. They both have issues with memory but not as bad as I have seen or read with other people their age who have been diagnosed.
Is the progression different for different people?
Thank you again for both your feedback on my questions. This has helped me a lot.
I am going to work on getting the right doctors lined up so we can get a better understanding of what is going on and where they stand with these illnesses. I will also look into help groups.
Kelly - yes, the disease progresses differently for each patient. We can make broad generalizations and predictions about the progression based on a large body of research and experience, but each person is affected uniquely. Some factors would include, the type of Neurocognitive impairment, other health conditions, age and age at onset of the disease, and lifestyle factors. Two recommendations: 1) Find a good gerontologist or physician specializing in geriatrics - having the right professional leading the march can make a HUGE difference, and 2) Start planning early - make sure legal documents are in place to help navigate the challenges ahead. Attending Caregiver Support Groups can help educate yourself and lessen the stresses as you share the journey with others.
Hello Kelly,
Just reading through some of your other posts. Seems like you have a lot on your plate. Times like these are always frightening but you are doing the right things. Reaching out for resources and getting a handle on the situation is a great first step.
To answer your question. The disease progression and systems/ behaviors can both vary greatly for dementia and Alzheimer's. I think @Byron Cordes will give great insight into when to step in. We do have a very simple needs assessment that can be downloaded at this article https://www.upwardhealthcare.com/single-post/Family-Caregiver-Guide . It can help identify the items that your parents can no longer take care of themselves. You or a family member may need to step in initially to make sure their basic needs are taken care of. Also, note that these needs will change overtime. Hope this helps.
